4/24 thru 5/5/14 - Rocky Mountain Hi

We left Las Vegas on Thursday morning (4/24) with our rig all repaired and looking brand new.   Our destination was the Denver area via I-15 and I-70 thru Utah and Colorado.   This was our first trip with the rig through the Rockies!

The drive through Utah was beautiful - unfortunately it's not that easy to pull over for photos when we are driving with the rig so the  photos were taken from the car.

We could easily spend a few months in Utah starting in the North around Salt Lake City and heading south towards Zion National Park.  We just need to time it right so we have nice weather.

We stopped for the night in Salina, Utah at a hole-in-the wall place called the Butch Cassidy RV Park.  Butch Cassidy was from this area and the locals take great pride in this claim to fame.  The manager at the park has read many books about Butch Cassidy and based on what she's read believes he did not die in Bolivia but lived a long life and died of old age in Utah.

The unique feature of this park was their aviary.  Here we are in the middle of nowhere and they have an aviary - you never know what you'll find in this country.

On Friday morning (4/25) we took a drive to the nearest post office to drop off flat Stanley. He is on his way back to Chicago :(.   Then we stopped at Denny's for breakfast and headed back to the rig.  We were all hitched up and back on the road by 11:00. We drove about 260 miles to our next destination, the Walmart parking lot in Rifle, Colorado.   It's free (except for what we buy) and it was right off the highway.   There was even a Starbucks across the street - what more do you need?  When we started our travels we thought we would spend more time in Walmart Parking lots but so far have only done 3 Walmarts, 1 Lowe's, and 1 Camping World.  They are wonderful places to spend one night.  They are usually right off the interstate and it's much easier (and cheaper) to pull into a Walmart than try to find a campground for just one night.

From the time we left Las Vegas on Thursday I was looking for a place to stay in the Denver area.  It was much more difficult than I expected I and was beginning to panic.   We have never had a problem finding a place but as the weather warms up it looks like it may be getting harder.   It didn't help that we were looking on the weekend.   The state parks were all booked up and the private parks were more money than we wanted to spend.   I even posted on a FB RV group to ask for advice.  We had found one park that might be a possibility but the office closed at 4:30 and I called at 4:37 (left a message and sent am email)  This was all on Friday!   The thought of getting to a busy city like Denver with no place to stay except Walmart was driving me nuts. Luckily, Debbie from the Boulder County Fairground Campground in Longmont, CO called us early Saturday morning and had room for us so we will be there thru Sunday or Monday (5/4 or 5/5).   That made the drive thru the Rockies much less stressful!
Driving through and over the Rockies (photo taken from car)

Our drive on Saturday was 217 miles mostly on I-70 going east over the Rockies.  The highest point was over 11,000 feet high and our truck handled it just fine.    We got to our campground around 2:30 and got set up.  They don't turn on the spigots at each campsite until May 1st so we filled up our water tank at the main pump (they've had frozen pipes in the past all thru April).  There is even a possibility of snow here on Sunday.

This campground isn't anything special, campsites are close together and there's only a few picnic tables but it works just fine for us.  It is a fairground so there are barns and exhibition buildings and even an indoor and outdoor arena.  The campground is separated from the buildings by a small road.

On Sunday morning we were all set to go for a walk and explore the area but when we cut through the fairground buildings we discovered there was going to be an auction.  Goodbye walk and goodbye Maddie, we took her back to the rig and we headed back for the auction.   It was amazing how much stuff they fit into one big room!  The auction was scheduled to run from Noon until everything was sold, they anticipated finishing up by 8:00 p.m.  We lasted about 6 1/2 hours with one break! There was a lot of furniture and a lot of knick-knacks and by the time we left around 6:30 things were going for pretty cheap.  The auctioneer even handed one young man a dollar to buy an iron bed that no one else would bid on!
I had my own number and wasn't afraid to use it!
They sold all these hats as one lot and they went for about $40.00

The weather in this part of Colorado has been pretty blustery.  Winds were blowing about 40-50 miles an hour and further east on I-70 there were quite a few overturned semi's.   West of us, in the Rockies, there was more snow.  It looks like, even with the cooler temps and high winds, we chose a good place to spend the week.

On Tuesday we played tourist.  Our first stop was in Boulder where we saw the house that was used in the TV Show "Mork and Mindy".  This show ran from 1978 until 1982 and I was a huge fan (I even had a Mork t-shirt).  Does that make me a Mork Dork?

The house is a private residence located in a historic section of Boulder.  The owners don't mind you taking pictures as long as they're taken from the sidewalk.

After that trip down memory lane we drove to the headquarters of Celestial Seasoning for a tea tour.
We saw a short movie about the company and about tea production (very short because we came in late).  Then we took a tour of the factory and got a whiff of the peppermint room - wow!  We also saw the different conveyor belts packaging up the tea for shipments all over the world.   When the tour ends they open the door and you are in the gift shop - how does that always happen?  We skipped the gift shop (for the moment) and went to the Tea Tasting Room.  I have never been a tea drinker but did try most of the samples and I really liked the Bengal Spice Herbal Tea.  Of course that meant we had to go back to the gift shop so I could buy some :).  It looks like I may become a tea drinker, who would have thought it?  It only took me 50+ years to start drinking coffee so I guess I'm just a late bloomer.

We learned one other thing about the Celestial Seasoning Company, something they're not very proud of.  Back in 1999 it was part of their routine maintenace program to posion the prairie dogs that made their homes on the plant's property.  From what I learned from a CNN article, it is legal to poison or shoot prairie dogs in Colorado if they are causing property damage.  "The pro-prairie dog community in Boulder was outraged when the company, noted for its environmentally friendly practices, didn't look into relocating the animals."    Due to the uproar from the community and their own employees, the company stopped the poisoning and now accepts prairie dogs relocated from other areas.
Prairie Dogs now make their home on land across from the parking lot at Celestial Seasonings.
We came to the Boulder area because Marty was hired to do a job at a Funeral Home in Boulder.  They needed photos for their website.  We drove over to the funeral home on Tuesday after our touring to check it out.  It's very close to where we're staying and after talking to the Funeral Director Marty was all set to do the job on Thursday.  However, wouldn't you know it, when he got there on Thursday afternoon there was a very large wake going on so the job had to be put on hold.  Hopefully they will re-schedule it soon as we are planning to leave the area by Monday (5/5).   We can be flexible and stay a few days longer if necessary (the beauty of being full-timers).

On Friday (5/2), the Mile High Merkes Family came for a visit.  That would be my cousin Duane, his wife Asha, and their children - Nissi (9), Joash (4), Boaz (2), and Rinnah (4 months).  They live in Denver, about 45 minutes away.  It was great to see them all (I really needed a little kid fix) and we had a wonderful afternoon visit with them.  We had a barbque and even though Maddie (bad dog) stole 3 1/2 raw hamburgers off the picnic table we still had plenty to eat.  After lunch we took a walk over to the pottery/glass show at the exhibition building. Two little boys and pottery on tables - are we crazy?  These kids are very well behaved and there were no problems at all.  We then walked over to the Longmont Humane Society which is right next to our campground.  The kids really enjoyed seeing all the dogs and cats and I think Asha and Duane were very glad to get out of there without any new pets.  Speaking of pets, I almost convinced Joash to stay with us and let his mom and dad take Maddie - almost but no-go.  The kids are all adorable and fun to be with, we gave them some bubbles to play with (thanks, Jan!) and they had a ball.  Duane claims his driveway is long enough for our rig so, who knows, maybe the next time we're in Colorado we'll spend a night by them.

We did another tourist day on Saturday and drove west to the Rockies.  We went into Rocky Mountain National Park via Estes Park.  It's beautiful but there is still a lot of snow in the higher elevations so we only got to go a short distance before we came to where the road was closed.
Why did the mule deer cross the road?  To stop all the traffic in Estes Park!

A good photographer doesn't let a little thing like a closed road stop him.

That's it for this week.  Hopefully we hear back from the funeral director on Monday, if not we will be leaving Colorado Monday and heading east through Nebraska to our final destination of Bellevue, Iowa.  We will be camp hosting on the Mississippi River near Bellevue from May 15th until July 15th.

4/17 thru 4/23/14 - Vegas Baby!

Last week in Southern California - aaaaahhhhh!
This week in Las Vegas - yuk!

Thursday, 4/17/14
We left Southern California on and headed northeast to Las Vegas.  There is the possibility of some photography work in the Las Vegas area so we decided to take our chances and head up there.  We are staying at the Road Runner RV Park and it's quite a comedown from Jojoba Hills RV Park.  We are parked on blacktop in a row with all the other rigs - no real privacy, you can hear tv's and radios and conversations - Yuk!   We are also on a main street so there's lots of noise from cars and trucks. The worst thing about being here is that after we checked in and got back into the truck with the rig we scraped the large concrete post and messed up the back corner of the rig.   Yikes, Las Vegas is already costing us money!!
Oh, No!
We are about four miles from the Las Vegas Strip where all the major casinos are.  We took a drive to check it all out on Thursday night and it was crazy crowded.  Maybe I'm getting older or maybe I'm getting used to the quiet of most of the campgrounds that we've stayed at - I have no desire to go to any of the casino's on the strip, too many people!!   Sam's Town Hotel/RV Park is about 4 blocks from where we are staying, we stopped in there after our drive and signed up for member cards and spent a few dollars - won a little and then lost a little more.

 Friday, 4/18/14
We spent a good part of Friday dealing with our insurance company.  The insurance company has their list of preferred repair places but the one nearest us was too busy to even see us until Wednesday (4/22).  We would have to drive the truck with the rig over there for them to look at and then we'd find out when they would be available to fix it.  This doesn't work for us, we want to get out of Vegas sooner than that.

Lucky for us there is a RV Center right across the street and Marty went over to talk to them and then our insurance adjustor also talked to them and we are taking it over there for the necessary repairs on Tuesday morning (4/21).   Hopefully it will be all fixed and we can leave here next Thursday morning and continue to make our way East.

Saturday, 4/19/14
Pawn Stars Pawn Shop
When we were driving around Thursday night we saw the "Pawn Stars" pawn shop.  There was a line to get in so we didn't stop, we came back Saturday morning and checked it out.  Chumley wasn't there - darn!  It was crowded but they have a "bouncer" in front making sure not too many people are in at one time.  They do have a lot of cool stuff there and I did talk to someone about selling a silver dresser set that we've been carrying around.  We planned to sell it on EBAY and the pawn shop employee agreed that would probably be our best bet.  This dresser set was left with the house when we bought our Oak Park house so there's no sentimental value.

Guitar signed by Bo Diddley and others
After leaving the pawn shop we headed over to Fremont Street.  Fremont Street was the the home of the first casinos in Las Vegas (back in the day) but had become a less attractive area after the "Strip" took off in the 1950's.  They are working on renovating the area to draw in more visitors.

Which of these legs is not like the others?
At one time Las Vegas was known for cheap buffets and we decided to check out the one at Sam's Town.  Saturday night was their rib buffet and it was a very good deal (9.99).  We ate our fill including an amazing dessert buffet!

Sunday, 4/20/14
Las Vegas at Sunset
We spent a mostly quiet day in the rig.  It's hot here (low 90's), so we didn't really feel like going out until the evening.   Sue, Jeanne and I share a pair of Cubs season tickets and I spent a lot of time on the computer listing Cub Tickets for their May games.  Anybody want tickets?  We're selling them at face value to family and friends.

Once the sun set and it got a little cooler we drove down to the "strip".  Marty wanted to take some nighttime shots and I wanted to explore a few of the casinos :).   We parked at Planet Hollywood (where the parking lot sign said no vehicles over 6'8" - that was exciting, we just made it!)   Marty walked down the strip looking for photo ops and I stayed at Planet Hollywood looking for $ ops - guess who had the better luck?  I left Planet Hollywood and meandered south on Las Vegas Blvd.  It is crazy on the strip, I saw 3 different Elvis impersonators along with a few mimes on my short walk over to MGM.  I had better luck at the MGM and quit while I was ahead - that's a first for me!  Walking back to meet Marty I was amazed at how many people were out.  There were a lot of families and tourists from other countries (especially Asia).  I understand the thr foreign tourists but don't quite understand how Las Vegas is a good place for a family vacation?

Tuesday, 4/22/14
Four years ago today my dad passed away.  My parents loved to travel and my dad really liked road trips (he did not like to fly!)  My sister Sue and I were lucky enough to go on a road trip with both of our  parents in July 2008.  We drove from Chicago to Childress in the Texas Panhandle to visit my mom's brother, Uncle Frank.  My dad, as usual, did most of the driving.  When we made our plans to visit my uncle I noticed that the Cubs would be in Houston that week.  Since we were going to be in Texas anyway we asked dad if we could drive the 483 miles further to see the Cubs play -"sure, no problem".  Then while in Childress we said "we've never see the Alamo, how far is that?" and off we went to San Antonio!  Hmmmmm, maybe we should have tried for Disney World.

My parents drove in their car or on their motorcycle to, I believe, 47 of the lower 48 states.  I know they missed one but I can't remember which one it was (Idaho? Oregon?).  As Marty and I drive around the country I often wonder if my parents have been down the same road (my guess would be yes, I sure wish I could ask them).

Mary hiking the trail
Ok, enough of the trip down memory lane!   We dropped off the rig at the RV dealer Tuesday morning and then spent the rest of the day exploring the area outside of Las Vegas.  It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the low 80's.  It was extremely windy which made the air pretty hazy.  We drove east from Vegas to the Lake Mead area.  We made a stop at the tourism office in Boulder City to pick up some maps and ask for ideas of where to go.  The women in the office highly recommended stopping at the Redstone dune trail for photo ops - that's all Marty needed to hear and that was our first stop.  The area outside of Las Vegas is very pretty (My 4th trip to Vegas and only the first time I've explored outside the city).  We stopped along the way to take pictures of Lake Mead and then, of course, we had to drive by Hoover Dam.  It's pretty impressive but driving by is fine, we had actually taken the tour years ago (I guess I have been out of Las Vegas before).

We returned to the rv dealer around 6:30 on Tuesday night and used the key they gave us to get into the lot so we could spend the night in our rig.  They did a very nice job of repairing the damage to the back corner and all that was left to do was painting.  We needed to be out of the rig by 7:30 Wednesday morning so they could do that.  Lucky for us, after thinking there were no photography jobs in Vegas, Marty got a call on Tuesday that there were seven jobs in the area so we spent ALL day Wednesday driving around photographing houses.  Then it was back to the RV Dealer where our rig was looking pretty and all ready to go.  We asked if we could spend one more night on the lot so we wouldn't have to drive at night - next stop Colorado!   Hey Mile High Merkes family, you better watch out, we may be in your area soon - I need a little kid fix!

April 1 - April 16 - Jojoba Hills

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

We left Mesa on Tuesday, April 1st and drove a little over 300 miles to Aguanga, California.  It was quite a ride once we got off the interstate.  We drove our final 50-60 miles on hilly, winding roads.  It was the first time driving on roads like that with the rig and Marty handled it like a pro!

The view from our rig
Sunset over Aguanga, California
The park we are staying at is Jojoba Hills RV Park.  This is a very popular Escapee's RV Park and we ended up spending four nights in the boondocking area because there weren't any sites available.  There actually was one site but we didn't think our rig would fit so we decided to wait until something more "fitting" opened up.  This worked out for us since we got the one site in the boondocking area  that had hook-ups and ended up paying only 5.00 per night while in boondocking.   We also had a coupon for seven nights at 50% off so this is turning into a pretty economical place to stay.  Once we did get a site it was close to the Clubhouse and all the activities so I'm glad we waited.  We will be here until the 17th and then make our way back to the Midwest.

View from the pool
This park is an Escapee Co-op Park and it is the nicest park we've stayed at.  The amenities and activities are amazing, there is always something to do.  Marty has discovered the game of Pickleball which is a very popular game in RV parks.  It's like ping-pong and tennis on a smaller court using whiffle balls.  At this park the courts for pickleball are available only in the morning and they are busy all morning.   We've also used the pool and hot tub a few times.  The view by the pool is so pretty that the chairs face away from the pool and look out at the mountains.  They have an amazing book and dvd library, craft room, sewing room, card room, billiards room and a large community room.

The main reason we decided to head west from Mesa to California was so we could visit Marty's sister, Jan, and her family.   Todd and Dena were kind enough to invite us for dinner on Wednesday and then we had them over for a barbque on Saturday.   Jan even spent two nights with us in the rig and we had a wonderful visit catching up with her.

While in southern California, Marty has had some more properties to photograph - I like these houses better than the ones in Arizona but everything here is also beige!  I guess it easier to rent houses that are painted with neutral colors.  We have driven up and down I-15 and are starting to know the area, too bad we're leaving soon.

Maddie and Mason were on Spring Break and Dena and Todd took their vacation the same week.  We wanted to spend some more time with them and we also wanted to see the Pacific Ocean.  We decided to go on a bike ride on a trail in Oceanside that ends at the ocean - it was a wonderful ride.  The weather was perfect, it was primarily flat, and we rode about 17 miles - my kind of bike ride! We even brought Flat Stanley along for a photo op.   Jan met us at the pier and we had lunch outside on the pier - I love Southern California!
Flat Stanley is happy he made it to the ocean before heading back to Chicago

Yay!
We made it!  What a great ride!

Later that night there was a lunar eclipse - the "blood moon".   It started at 12:45 A.M. and Marty and I both went outside to watch it but only one of us could keep their eyes open to watch the whole thing - luckily it was Marty and he took some amazing photos!
WOW!

Marty had one final property to photograph on Tuesday (4/15) so we drove north to Murietta to take care of that and then we drove to San Juan Capistrano to play tourist.  It was a beautiful drive over the mountains and the plan was to visit the Mission and then drive south along the ocean before heading east back to Jojoba Hills.  However, Marty checked his email and found out that he had just gotten one final property to photograph.  As luck would have it, it was close to the earlier one so we ended up retracing our route over the mountains.  No last look at the ocean for us :(.

Wednesday (4/16) was our last full day in California and Jan came over for a final visit.  She also brought us lunch and dinner and an Easter suprise!!  What a wonderful treat that was!  It would have been nice to spend more time with our California family but we need to be in Iowa by 5/15 and now that's less than a month away.   We had so much fun with the Calbert's and can't wait until we can come back.  The best part of being on the road is getting to spend time with people we don't see very often but the worst part is having to say good-bye.

We are leaving Thursday morning but really aren't sure where we'll be on Thursday night.  We had every intention of taking I-40 west and then I-35 north to Iowa but now there is a possibility of a few photography jobs in another city that was hit hard by the housing crisis.  Here's a hint "cha-ching".  We will find out after we leave so we may be making a detour, I'll keep you posted :).

3/31/14 - Sarah writes a Post

Sarah wanted to do a post of her week with us in Mesa - Enjoy!

Sarah here Friday, March 21

Last Friday I, Sarah, went on my first air plane ride. I was going to phoenix AZ, to mesa AZ. It took 4 hours to get there! When we arrived, my Aunt Mary and Uncle Marty picked us up from the airport. It was 30 degrees in IL and in AZ it was 80 degrees. When we got back me and my grandma spent the night there.

The next day we worked on cutting out letters for my scrapbook. After cutting out letters we spent the rest of the day swimming in the family pool. We also tested the Cricut so it worked properly. When it was pool time Uncle Marty had an underwater camera so we took a LOT of pictures under water.

On Sunday, We started packing up when my grandma said Lets put all the Grand Canyon clothes in the smaller suit case and Aunt Mary said that there is no leaving stuff behind because we have the R.V. When we started our journey when we were half
way there my grandma said; oh no! I forgot my medications! I said grandma we have
our home (R.V) with us. Then when we finally got to the Grand Canyon we started to unpack. Then we went to a shuttle bus stop to go to the Grand Canyon. When we got on the bus it was packed!!!! Then when we got off we were at the Grand Canyon. My first words
Were OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!

Now on Monday, we did all sorts of crazy things. We went shopping for almost each grandchild that my grandma has. My cousin Sammy got a new pair of earrings, my brother got a hat and I got a sweatshirt. Then we had crazy trouble with one section of the shuttle buses. We would get to the bus and we would ask the bus driver if it was the right bus, but she said the other bus would take you there. So we got to the other bus stop just in time we also asked the driver if we were on the right bus. But he said the bus that we went to was the right bus. So we just walked to the Grand Canyon. When we got there we started to hike down the GRAND Canyon.

On Tuesday, we packed up and we left the Grand Canyon. We took a bathroom break and we went to the back of the R.    V and got some snacks. The snacks were pretzels and mustard. When we got back, we unpacked and made the R.V walls get wider.
Then we hit the pool. We took even MORE photos under water.
After, all that fun we went back to scrap book. We watched Jeopardy for a while, then we called it a night.

On Wednesday, we called it a pool/scrap book day. For the pool there were 2 other kids playing water gun wars and fish. Fish is a 3 player game, and there is one fisherman and 2 fish. The fisherman tries to catch the two fish with the water gun or a noodle. A water gun war is totally different then Fish. The other game is catorgory. It’s a game were you name a category and whatever the person names that is your favorite thing you swim across to the other side(across or side to side). When we got back we went to DQ.I got a cherry dipped cone, my grandma got a lemon moraine ,aunt Mary got
Chocolate cherry LOVE and my uncle Marty got a Sunday I think. We got back early because there was a sand storm warning on the news. We just saw a little dust but not much. Also we had a very special visitor come (flat Stanley).

On Thursday we, prepared for the spring training game for the Cubs.  We took Flat Stanley with to the Spring Training game.  Stanley got to be held by the Fergie Jenkins and one of the Cubs players. I got to take lots of pictures of the Cubs and Sox. We got a signed baseball by Fergie Jenkins. We went on the Cubs trolley. We also sat up very close.  I almost got sunburned by the steaming hot sun. After wards we got an hour earlier so that we could see the batting practice. Flat Stanley and I got to sit by the dugout.

On Friday it was the last day at Arizona/ pool. It was the saddest day yet. So we spent the whole day at the pool and scrapbooking.  I was so sad that I didn’t want to get out of the pool. In the pool there were two little girls who wanted to balance on a beach ball. So I had to teach them. I told them to just balance. Sooner or later they were balancing. Then we started to play hot potato with the beach ball. Then after that we saw who could hold their breath the longest. The other older girl beat me. Then we went back home, R.V. We started to scrapbook afterward I started my blog. I only got up to a certain point, but here it is. Before we did all that it was time to go to lunch with Nancy, my Grandma and Aunt Mary’s cousin. We went to Pasties.  Later on we went out to dinner.  The name was Organ Stop.  I had HAWIIAN PIZZA. After we suggested a song, When the saints go marching in and another song.

Saturday, the week has sadly passed now it is time go back to the deeply freezing cold weather where there is sadly snow and now it is time to go back to Chicago.  We took two airplanes. The airport was in Phoenix and the other was in Texas. Then my grandpa picked us up and went to Around the Clock in the deeply freezing cold weather on Saturday night.
Goodbye Arizona! :(
